Thursday we fished close to home and flat crushed the trophy rockfish. Caught around 15 in an hour!
Friday the weather threw us a curve ball with 40 knot gusts out of the northwest. We tried it for awhile and caught a few but it was just too nasty after about 9:30.
Saturday we had pretty weather and a decent bite and managed a limit by about 10:00 am.
Sunday was a real tough one for fish. For some reason the bite just shut off up and down the Bay. We were able to scratch out 6 keeper rockfish.
Awesome Trophy Rockfish Opening Weekend
We have had and incredible opening weekend. Fishing has been off the chain with a good mix of pre and post spawn fish. Yesterday morning we were never able to get all the rods out because the bite was so fast, and the afternoon trip was almost as good. Todays trip was a little tougher due too the high winds and rain but we still managed a limit by 9:30 am. The fish have ranged in size from 34 inches to our biggest so far at 44 inches and 34 pounds. Lots of bait and plenty of fish should be good fishing for a few more weeks.

One more catfish trip before trophy rockfish season!
Took my Dad and youngest Son on a catfish trip very close to home this afternoon. We did not have the numbers or size that we have found further up river but it was a nice way to spent a beautiful afternoon never the less. We or should I say, Jon by himself, managed to catch 2 blue cats to 7 pounds, 1 white cat at 4 pounds, and 1 awesome channel cat that weighed in at 8.6 pounds. We had a great time and I was able to scout out some places that had been on my mind for a while. These catfish seem like they are here to stay and we might as well try and catch ‘em. They bite well, fight well, and taste well, what more can you ask for from a fish! Trophy rockfish season opens this coming Sat. and things look good, keep checking back for more reports.

Lots of Big Rockfish on the way!

On Saturday we fished the Potomac River on a catch and release trip. Had a dozen rockfish up to 42″. All the fish were fresh from the ocean, covered in sea lice, and full of roe. From what I have been hearing there are plenty more still down the Bay in Virginia heading this way. Today we moved the “Miss Evelyn” to Drury’s Marina. This will be our home until June when we then move to Solomons, MD. Our goal is to stay as close as possible to the best fishing in our area throughout the season. We have had a great time at Dennis Pt./St. Marys Yachting Center but I think it is time for us to make a move and give our customers the best chance at good fishing that we can.
First Catch and Release Rockfish Trip of 2012

Went on our first C and R trip of the 2012 Bay River Fishing Campaign. Caught 20 fat and healthy trophy rockfish up to 40 plus inches. Lots of fish, bait, and gannets on the river today. The rockfish have been moving into the area for a few weeks and more are showing up every day. The fish are on the move and feeding up for the upcoming spawn. Things look to be maybe a week earlier than last year but not out of the normal range for them to be here. With all the bait they should stick around for a while on there way back down river. The trophy season will hopefully be just as good as last year.
Shallow water catfish action!
Found some blue cats in less than 5 feet of water this weekend. They really put on a show in the skinny water. Had the best day we have had so far this season on numbers of fish and had fish up to 17 pounds. Also caught white and channel catfish in the deeper water first thing in the morning. Had a white cat that weighed 6.75 pounds and a 7 pound channel catfish. The catfish action in the Potomac River is on fire right now. The rockfish are begining to move into the River as well. The trophy season is only a few weeks away now. 2012 is looking good so far!
Ready For Spring Trophys 2012!
Blue Catfish Action Continues!
2011 The Year In Review
This past year was a very enjoyable season here at Bay River. We enjoyed fishing with all of our customers and look forward to seeing you all again this year.
The spring trophy rockfish season started out mediocre put finished strong and was overall one of the best we have had in quite some time. Our fishing was mostly done in the Bay proper and the Potomac River was not as good as in past years. Our biggest fish was 48 inches and just a shade under 40 pounds and we had quite a few quality 40 plus inch fish also. Here is a picture of one of the larger fish we caught this past spring.
When the trophy trolling began to slow down we switched over to chumming for rockfish in the lower Potomac. The fishing was great for the last two weeks of May with limit catches of fish from 18 to 32 inches with a scattering of croaker, bluefish, and even a few white catfish.
This is a picture of an average size fish from the chumming grounds this past spring.
The chumming slowed down after Memorial Day weekend and we began to light tackle troll and jig for schooling rockfish and managed to catch limits for several more weeks. By the third week of June this fishing slowed as well and we were left with no keeper rockfish to speak of until the last week of August.
The summer fishing was good for snapper bluefish, spot, undersize rockfish, spanish mackeral, and even a few bull red drum.

By the end of August we had a few keeper rock back in the area and we began chumming for rockfish and bluefish on several rockpiles close to home. This was outstanding light tackle action with catches averaging upwards of 150 fish normal. This lasted till late Oct.
In November with no great numbers of trophy rockfish showing up we began chumming in the Bay for rockfish with some nice catches of fish in the mid 20 inch to 36 inch range. We actually chummed on these fish into December which was a first for us.
The trophy run this fall was not up to par but we did manage a few nice fish like the one here.
With the end of the rockfish season in December we began to the test the waters for catfish. This is something that I have been interested in for some time. We fished close to home around the Wicomico River and found quite a few Blue cats. With this fishery taking off we are now able to offer trips year round, as long as the River dosen’t ice up!
We are looking forward to another great year in 2012. With the last few years in mind we are most likely going to follow the fish more by moving our base of operations to different ports during the course of the upcoming season. This will hopefully keep us on the best fishing available and provide our clients with an enjoyable day on the water. We will keep our pricing the same as last year. Keep checking back here to our website for updates and reports.
Once again Thank You to all of our customers! We would love to see you all again and hopefully some new faces as well this coming season. If you would like to book a trip in 2012 please give us a call!
